The purpose o f this study is to view the relation between depressed states and thyroid function by measuring the serum levels o f T 3, T 4, free T 3, free T4, TSH and serum tite rs o f antithyroid antibodies. The methods o f measuring were radioimmunoassy method (T 3, T 4 and TSH), RBC hemagglutination method(£ree T 3 and free 丁4) and fluorescent antibody detection method(antith yro id antibodies). Subjects w ere consisted o f 31 patients w ith prom inent depressive symptoms who w ere treated at the D epartm ent o f Neurop sychiatry o f Seoul Paik H ospital From O ct. 1983 to June 1986. The controls o f free T 3 and free T 4 w ere consisted o f 21 medical personels o f the same hospitaL The results w ere as follow ing : 1) The mean serum levels o f free T 3, T 4, free T 3 and TSH in patient group were significantly low er than those o f control group. (T 3; p 〈0.001, T 4; p <0.001, free T 3 ; p<0.05, TSH ; p = 0 .0 0 ) Especially, the serum levels o f TSH o f 23 patients (74%) w ere on the low er lim it o r below of the norm al range. 2) The mean serum levels o f free T 4 in patient group was not different significantly from that o f control group. 3) In te s t o f antithyroid antibodies, the serum s o f 29 patients w ere examined. 3 patients w ere positive on 1: 100 dilution o f serum . I patient was positive on both antim icrosom ai antibodies and antithyroglobulin antibodies. 2 patients w ere positive on antimicrosom ai antibodies alone
