The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of propranolol in managing neuroleptic-induced akathisia. Physically healthy hospitalized patients (47 schizophrenic patients and 2 bipolar patients) from the inpatient services of the seoul National Mental Hospital who were being treated with neuroleptics and in whom neuroleptic-induced akathisia developed during the course of therapy were included in the study. The patients were subdivided into two groups and the study was executed double blind, parallel group design comparison of propranolol and benztropine administered for a 7-day period each. The efficacy of two drugs was assessed on 1,3,5,7 day by Extrapyramidal Rating Scale of Chouinard. Response by propranolol was quite rapid, occuring within 24 hours in the significant cases (14/24). D o s e s r e q u ir e d fo r im p r o v e m e n t w e re low(30-90mg/day) and side effects were fewer than benztropine group. According to the statistical analyses, no differential effects were found: both drugs were equally effective and rapid.
