  • 1

A clinical study was done on 79 hypertensive patients to investigate the personality characteristics of the patients using the minnesota multiphasic personality inventory (M M PI). 77 healthy subjects and 47 tuberculosis patients were used as control groups. The results were as follows. 1) The mean T-scores on each scale were within normal range in both hypertensive group and normal control group. 2) Comparing hypertensive group with normal control group, scales of F, Hs, D, Hy, Pa, Pt, Si (p 〈•01) and M f (p 〈.05) were significantly higher, but k scale (p 〈.01) was significantly lower in hypertensive group. 3) Comparing hypertensive group with normal control group according to sex, in male hypertensive group, scales of F, Hs, D, Hy, Sc, Pt, si (p (.01) and pa (p(.0 5) were significantly higher than those of male normal group. In female hypertensive group, scales of F, Hs, Hy, Sc, M a (p〈.01) and D , P t (p〈.05) were significantly higher than those of female normal group. K scale in both male and female hypertensive group was significantly lower then normal group. 4) There were no significant differences in all scales between male and female of normal control group. However, in hypertensive group Hy scale (p 〈•01) was significantly higher in female and Si scale (p (.0 5 ) was significantly higher in male. 5) In hypertensive group, no significant difference was found in all scales compared by age, occupation and duration of illness. 6) Comparing normal group w ith tuberculosis group, in tuberculosis group, scales of Hs, D , Hy (p(.0 1) were significantly higher, but k scale (p (.01) was significantly lower in this gruop. 7) Comparing tuberculosis group w ith hypertensive group, in hypertensive group, scales of F , Hs, Sc (p(.0 1) and Hy, Pa, P t, Si (p〈.05) were signifi-cantly higher.
