120 Veterans of the Korean War and Viet Nam War were studied to verify the possible classification of the subjects, those having Post traumatic Stress Disorder( PTSD) with or without coexisting Organic Brain Syndrome(OBS), into subgroups. The study groups were devided as following; 1) Absence of PTSD and absence of OBS 2) PTSD without OBS 3) Both PTSD and OBS present The 3 subgroups were made and the following 3 examination instruments were applied; the Diagnostic Interview Schedule-Post traumatic Stress Disorder(DISPTSD), Diagnostic Interview Schedule-Mini Mental State(DIS-MMS),Symptom Checklist-90-Revision-Brief Symptom Inventory(SOL-O-R-BSI). The results were then analysed by using the X2 test, ANOVA, and discriminant analysis. The following conclusions were reached; 1) Out of a total of 25 variables entered into the discriminant analysis, only 15 variables(6DIS-PTSD, 5DIS-MMS, 4SCL-90-R-BSI) were significant as discriminant variables. Especially of PTSD variables, the symptoms which were judged to be signigicant were numbing to the external environment intensification of symptoms, avoidance of activite, sudden acting, hyperalertness and sleep disturbance. 2) Compared to the group consisting of those only with PTSD, the group consisting of those having PTSD with OBS had a characteristic tendency showing general increase in not only mental capacity symptom of DISMMS but also DIS-PTSD and general psychological symptoms of SCL-90-R-BSI. 3) 15 discriminant variables that were statistically significant were used to reach a classification predictability rate of 95.07%, for determining subtypes of PTSD with or without coexisting OBS. Classification into each subtype is possible with strong support from this classi- fication prediction rate.
