Comparison of Fear Objects between Psychiatric and Normal Subjects

In this survey with factor analytic technique, the authors attempted to evaluate the possibility of discriminating fear objects between normal and psychiatric subjects. For the study, 100 normal subjects(54 males, 46females) and 100 psychiatric patients (54 males,46 females) were selected as research subject. Age and sex were dusly controlled. Fear Survey Schedule-II that consists of 76 fear items (Wolpe and Lang, 1964) was given and each item was evaluated by 5 point scale. All the data were computed using SPSS. From factor analysis of phobic items, 9 factors could be extracted ： the fear of rejection from society (Factor I) , the fear of death (Factor II) the fear of spooky phenomenon (Factor III ), the fear of travelling (Factor IV), the fear of interpersonal relationship (Factor V ), the fear of expo-sure (Factor VI) the fe ar of thunderstorm (FactorYII), the fear of noisy event (Factor VIII ) and the agoraphobia (FactorIX). Among the 9 factors, 6 factors such as the fear of rejection from society，the fear of death , the fear of spooky phenomenon^ the fear of interpersonal relationship, the fear of exposure and the fear of thunderstorm were evaluated to be the common fears from the fact that the 6 factors were equally loaded beween the normal and patient subjects. On the other hand, 2 factors such as the agoraphobia and the fear of travellin g could be evaluated as fear objects charateristic of psychiatric population because the 2 factors were heavily loaded to the patient subjects. Peculiarly enough, the fear of noisy event was characteristic of normal subjects. This was attributed to the autistic tendency of the patient and possible drug effect. Consequently, most of fear objects did not show significant differences quantitatively or qualitativ ely between the two groups. Only agoraphobia (including the fear of travelling ) could be estimated to be a clinically significant fear object
