다문화가정 초등학생의 모국어 및 한국어 능력이 제3언어로서의 영어 학습에 미치는 영향에 관한 사례 연구

A Case Study of Multicultural Primary School Students’ Mother Tongue and Korean Language Competencies and Their Effects on Learning English as a Third Language

본 연구는 다문화가정 초등학생의 모국어 및 한국어 능력이 제3언어로서의 영어 학습에 미치는 영 향을 5명의 사례를 통하여 살펴보고 영어교육적 시사점을 찾는데 목적이 있다.연구 참여 학생은 11-12세의 다문화가정 초등학생들로 인천 지역에 거주하고 있으며 부모 중 최소 한 명은 중국,러 시아,대만 출신이었다.이들을 대상으로 실시한 한국어 및 영어 시험 평가 결과와 반구조화된 인 터뷰 질문을 사용한 인터뷰 결과를 종합하여 다문화가정의 초등학생들이 다언어 사용자로서 갖는 영어학습자로서의 특성을 조사하였다.자료 분석 결과,다문화가정 학생들은 일반적으로 중국어, 러시아어와 같은 그들의 모국어 능력 유지,제2언어로서의 한국어 능력 개발 면에서 어려움을 겪 고 있으며,이는 제3언어로서의 영어 학습에도 전이되는 어려움을 겪고 있었다.영어 교사들은 이 들 학생들에게 영어를 지도할 때 이들의 부족한 모국어 및 한국어 능력이 제3언어인 영어 학습에 미치는 부정적 간섭 등의 영향을 감안하여 각별한 주의를 기울여야 할 것이다.연구 결과를 바탕 으로 추후 초등학교 다문화가정 학생들에게 영어를 지도함에 따른 실질적인 제안 사항을 몇 가지 제시하였다.

This study aims to investigate five multicultural primary school students’ mother tongue and Korean language competencies and their effects on learning English as a third language. The students were 11-12 aged 5th graders in Incheon and one or two of their parents were from China, Russia, and Taiwan. Results of the official school tests in Korean and English, an English writing test, and semi-structured interviews were collected and analysed to discuss how the multilingual students learn English as a third language. It was revealed that the multicultural students were generally experiencing difficulties in maintaining their mother tongue, developing Korean language competence, and learning English as a third language. Teachers of English should pay special attention to multicultural students and consider negative linguistic transfers from their deficient competencies in mother tongues and Korean to learning English as a third language. Based on the findings, some practical suggestions are made for teaching English to multicultural students in the future
