The Ego Defence Mechanism among the Korean Proverbs

The author collected the Korean Proverbs (Sokdam) to make a study of the ego defence mechanisms involved in them. One hundred and seventy-two proverbs which were considered to have implicating meanings of the ego defence mechanisms were collected, and they were classified according to types of defence mechanisms. Forty-four proverbs were associated with projection, forty-two with compensation, twenty-nine with identification, nineteen with reaction formation, sixteen with displacement, ten with rationalization, six with denial, and two each with sublimation, conversion and others (isolation and substitution), respectively. The author attempted to uncover and discuss the psychoanalytic meaning of the proverbs implicating the ego defence mechanism, and suggested further study in this area.
