This study was designed to investigate as to whether the depressive trends are related to tuberculosis patients. For the purpose of assessment of depression, Self-Rating Depression Scale devised by Zung was applied in 124 tuberculosis patients who were admitted to Armed Forces Masan Hospital, and 107 normal subjects from Apr. to Jun, 1984. The results were as follows. 1) The mean scores were 47.62±8.17 in the tuberculosis patients and 42.40±8.56 in the control group. There was significant difference in depressive scores between the tuberculosis patients and the control group. (P < 0 .005) 2) As for the frequency order of the SDS items, confusion ranked first and retardation next in the tuberculosis patients. 3) The depression in the tuberculosis patients was characterized by the higher score in psychological equivalents than in physiological equivalents and pervasive affect. There were significant differences between the tuberculosis patients and the control group in pervasive affect, physiological equivalents and psychological equivalents. (P < 0 .005)
