The authors retrospectively reviewed 20 elderly alcoholics age over 60 who visited department of neuropsychiatry, Keimyung University Dongsan Me dical Center, Taegu from January, 1969 to July , 1983. DSM -III was used for diagnosis. Results were as follows: 1. The ratio of male to female alcoholics was 19 : 1. 2. All of the cases met the diagnosis of alcohol use disorder. 19(95%) of them met the diagnostic criteria of alcohol dependence and only one case belonged to alcohol abuse. Alcohol-induced organic mental disorders were able to be identified in 17 (85%) of 20 cases: alcohol amnestic disorder (5), alcohol withdrawal delirium (4), alcohol with drawal (3), dementia associated with alcoholism (3), alcohol idiosyncratic intoxication (1) and alcohol hallucinosis (1). All of these 17 alcohol-induced organic mental disorder cases had alcohol dependence. 3. Mental disorders excluding alcoholic mental disorders were found in 5 cases (2596) and they were atypical organic mental disorder (2), major depression (1), sleep disorder (1) and organic personality disorder (1). 4. Physical disorders w ere found in 14 cases (70 %) and they had liver disease (6), hypertension (4), pulm onary tuberculosis (2), malnutrition (2), pellagra (1), cellulitis (1), frostbite (1) and hearing impairment (1). 5. The period of excessive drinking could be infe-rred in 12 cases with age of onset below 60.
