Prolactin Response to Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone (LRH ) and Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH) in Schizophrenics
This study was designed to investigate the effect of LRH and TRH on prolactin between 17 schizophrenic patients and 11 normal controls. The rationals for the investigation on the response of prolactin to LRH and TRH were based on the fact that some researchers claimed that in schizophrenia there was an excess of dopamine and opioid while there was a decrease in the activity of norepinephrine and prostaglandins in schizophrenics. These substances were known to participate in the regulation of prolactin secretion. The result were as follows : 1. Before administration of LRH and TRH , mean serum prolactin levels of both schizophrenics and control group were within normal range. 2. After the administration of LRH, mean serum prolactin levels of schizophrenics were significantly higher than that of normal controlsat 30,60 and 120 minutes ( p < . 05, p < . 01) 3. In the TRH test done, mean serum prolactin levels of schizoprenics were not significantly different from that of normal controls. The findings of our study suggest that these results may be indicative of a dysfunction in the mechanism regulating prolactin secretion in chizophrenics,
