In order to determine the prevalence rates and ecological aspects of major mental disorders such as schizophrenia, affective disorder and epilepsy in a part of Korean Urban Community, Shyllim7 Dong, Seoul, Korea. This survey was conducted using the census visit method from Jun. 1982, for 4 months. This community is m ainly composed of poor peoples, which is considered as a slum. Followings are the results obtained. 1) The prevalence rates for schizophrenia, affective disorder and epilepsy among 20, 727 inhabitants were 0. 11%, 0. 08% and 0. 10% respectively. 2) About seven-tenths of the schizophrenics (69. 6% ) and two-thirds of the epileptics (61. 9%) had suffered for more than 5 years. 3) Twenty two schizophrenic (95. 7%) had left their native places for the urban community, and eighteen schizophrenics (78. 3%) have been there for more than 5 years. 4) In regard to treatment, the most popular treatment was mental hospital care (46. 2 % ) , followed by acupuncture and herb medicine (35. 4%). shamanistic practices and religious method (27. 7 % ), and eleven patients (16. 9%) did not receive any treatment.
