Author studied the prevalence rate of schizoph-renia, manic-depressive psychosis, organic brain syndrome and epilepsy in the population of male draftees in a southern provincial area of Korea for the period of 4 years. The number of total population is 278,227 and they were all 20 years old. Any draftee who was suspected to have any psychiatric problem was referred to regional Arm y Hospital, where they were examined by army psychiatrists including the author, and were diagnosed. The results showed that the prevalence rate of schizophrenia is 0.27%, manic-depressive psychosis, 0. 008%, organic brain syndrome, 0.006%, and epilepsy, 0. 22%, Comparing w ith the data from other reports, the prevalence rate of schizophrenia and epilepsy is roughly consistant with other reports, but that of manic-depressive psychosis is much lower. This discrepancy can be attributed to the age of population. And, the prevalence rate of schizophrenia and epilepsy in urban area was higher than that in ural area. This difference, which is not consistant with descriptions of the textbooks, appears to reflect the characteristic psychosocial condition of Korea, which is experiencing rapid industrialization and migration of population to urban from rural area.
