Opinions of Protestant Pastors and Catholic Fathers about the Cause and Treatment of the Mental Illness

Opinions about the cause and treatment of the mental illness were collected from 500 pastors and 100 fathers by the mail questionnaire method. Respondents were 103 pastors and 28 fathers. The result can be summarized as follows. 1. The majority of pastors learned about the mental illness m ainly from the Bible, while fathers from the mass communication and th e psychiatry lecture. 2. Many respondents (72. 5%) have actually observed the mental breakdown of their believers during and/or after the revival service. Most of the pastors regarded it as demon-related phenomena. 3. Many respondents (68. 7%) believed that the state of demon possession has several characteristics, and that it is certainly different from illn-esses of other causes. 4. The pastors showed significantly higher de monological orientation in their explanations of the mental illness th an the fathers. 5. A number of the respondents (91. 3% of pastors and 32. 1% of fathers) have attempted ‘faith healing’ to the m ental patients. For the efficacy of the faith healing,， the pastors responded as relatively positive and the fathers as skeptical. 6. It was suggested that the above-mentioned differences of the opinions between two groups come from the way of obtaining informations and the general attitudes of the churches about the mental illness.
