This study is intended to investigate the effects of neuroleptics on serotonin content and the activity of monoamine oxidase (MA O ), about which little has been known so far. An experiment was made with 60 Slcque-Dowley rats divided into six different groups. The^ five experimental groups except the control group were given the same portion of chlorpromazine, thiroidazine, perphenazine, hacperidol or pimozide throughintraperitoneal injection for a week, while the control group was given saline for the same period. Both serotonin content and MAO activities significantly increased in brain tissues of the rats injected with the neuroleptics. Therefore, it is-believed that neuroleptics have a significant effe- ct on serotonin metabolism
