1. Nomifensine, an isoquinoline dopaminergic agonist, was investigated in a randomized single blind group comparison with amitriptyline in 23 patients with depression. The dosage schedule was a flexible one, with a daily dose range from 50 to 250mg for bo th groups. 2. Assessments were made at biweekly intervals for 4 weeks using the check list with 45 items. 3. Nomifensine was shown to be as effective as amitriptyline in relieving depression. Nomifensine, however, showed a trend toward more rapid effect and a little lesser late effect. 4. Neither drug produced serious unwanted side effects. But nomifensine was relatively more free of side-effects. 5. Results of our study have to be generalized with caution because of limited sample size.
