Jung’s Association Tests for Schizophrenic Patients

Jung’s Association Tests were performed to 20 symptomatic Schizophrenics, 20 Schizophrenics in remission and 20 normal persons similar to schizophrenic groups in education, sex and age. The results were as following. 1. The averages of the median reaction-times of each person were 2.67 sec. for symptomatic group, 2.89 sec for remission group and 1.98 sec for normal group. The difference in reaction time between schizophrenic groups and normal group was statically significant. (p < 0 .05) The frequencies of prolonged reaction times were 39.2% for symptomatic grcup, 40.7% fcr remission group and 36.1% in normal group. 2. The frequencies of reproduction failures were 26.5% for symptomatic group, 25.2% for remission group and 18. 1% for normal group. In all three groups, the disturbance in reproduction was correlated with prolonged reaction time by the same stimulus word or by the preceding* stimulus word if it is not the case. However, this tendency, though statistically not significant, was less characteristic in schizophrenic groups. 3. Among the “Complex signs”, reactions with perseveration, clang association, neologism, proper noun and meaningless word were present in schizophrenic groups, only. Other signs such as failure of reaction, stimulus word repetition, specific emotional response, foreign language reaction, phrase completion, multiword reaction, close reaction proper, distant reaction, repetitive use of same word as reaction word and egocentric reaction were characteristically high in schizophrenic groups, comparing with the data of the normal group. Through the observation of repetitive reaction words, the central theme in the thought of that person could be elicited. 4. Stimulus words in which the “Complex signs” occurred in greater number were; In symptomatic schizophrenics; 61. house 33. pity 44. to despise 92. to choose 38. new 19. pride 86. false 25. journey 28. to sin 36. to die 56. pay attention 66. big. 85. stork 3. water 9. window 100. to abuse 73. box 91. door In remission group; 3. water 84. to fear 92. to choose 28. to sin 41. money 66. big 38. new 75. family 33. pity 26. blue 69. part 80. lie 2. green In normal group; 19. pride 44. despise 41. money 38. new 60. to marry 22. angry 65. fur 50. unjust 95. ridicule 80. lie 5. Besides those comparisons, one example of association tests in schizophrenics was reviewed in this article. The results revealed patient s conscious as well as unconscious feelings and patterns of his thinking. 6. Jung’s association test seems to be useful to understand the psychological aspects and emotional states of the schizophrenics. Further, association test may be able to be used as a tool to study psychopathology in schizophrenia
