The purpose of this article is to delineate and to clarify the processes of encounter with schizophrenic patients. Until recently, encounter with patient is known as prescientific and largely depend on therapist’s own perceptions and intuitions. Brief historical review of various psychiatric approaches and empirical studies was made and according to the author’s experience of treating 4 Schizophrenic patients in Day Hospital, following processes were delineated. 1. Process of perception and comprehension 2. Process of participation 3. Process of identification or regression 4. Process of suffering-resolving of countertranceference 5. Encounter It seems that these processes occured sequencially or simultaneously. This would be of some value in understanding the nature of Encounter and further treatement process of Schizophrenic patients.
