  • 37

During a (consecutive) three month period from August 1, 1981 to October 31, 1981, the author performed the self-rating depression scale of W.W.K. Zung on a 150 normal group and 123 psychiatric out-patients. The tested groups were classified into different psychiatric diagnoses and correlation analysis of self-rating depression scale (SDS) indices were obtained according to their age, sex, occupation, number of familial memfcerr marital status, economic status, and educational level. The author obtained the follow ing results; 1. The SDS was not affected by age, sex, occupation, number of family members, marital status, economic staus and educational level of both the normal and neurotics, but was affected by the sex of normal groups, showing higher score in female. 2. The mean SDS indices for the normal group and the out-patients with depressive neurosis, anxiety neurosis, hysterical neurosis, and schizophrenia were 41.0, 61.5, 54.8, 50.8 and 48.3 respectively. 3. The mean SDS indices o f the patients with anxiety neurosis, hysterical neurosis and schizophrenia differed significantly from those of the depressive neurotics. 4. The difference between the mean SDS index, of the normal gruop and that of the depressive neurotics was highly significant. 5. The highest scale in the normal group and in the neurotic group excluding depressive neurotics was “confusion, that in the depressive neurotics was “emptiness” and that in the schizophrenics was “psychom otor retardation.” The lowest scale in all the groups was “suicidal rumination.” 6. “Hopelessness” and “emptiness,, were the items which showed the greatest difference between depressive neurotics and others including neurotics except depressive neurosis, schizophrenia and normal groups.
