腦電氣衝擊이 白鼠腦의 MAO 活性度에 미치는 影響

Effect of Electroconvulsive Shock on the Activity of Monoamine Oxidase in Rat Brain

An experimental study was performed to investigate the mechanism of antidepressive effect of electroconvulsive shock and the relationship between the change of MAO activity and that of monoamine level. 110 albino rats were used, and the activity of MAO in whole brain were measured at various time intervals up to 120 hours, and at 24 hrs after various numbers o f electric shock up to 40 numbers, following Single or Multiple (once a day) Cerebral Electroconvulsive Shock. The results are as follows. 1. The activity of MAO after Single-Electroconvulsive Shock was not significantly different from that of the contro l, and was not changed at various time intervals. 2. The activity of MAO after Multiple-Electroconvulsive Shock (8 No.) was increased at 2hrsand 24hrs, and was returned to normal level at various time intervals. 3. The activity of MAO at 24 hours after M ultiple- Electrocᄋnvulsive Shock (NO; 8,16, 24,32,40》 were all increased, showing rapid upward tendency to 16-numbers of electroconvulsive shock, and then maintained at that level. The results seem rather contradictory to interpret the increased cojitent of monoamine after shock. We suggest that it would be important to compare the post-shock MAO levels of the two groups, one group in which MAO inhibitors are given, the: other, not given. And this will provide more: conclusive data to understand the relationship between the increased content of monoamine the change of MAO activity, and the antidepressive effect of electroconvulsive therapy.
