In this study, the author reported on various childhood characteristics of 35 bipolar patients who were diagnosed formerly as manic-depressive illness and visited the neuropsychiatric department of Korea university hospital during the period from January, 1981 to February, 1981. This study was to compare the childhood characteristics of manic-depressive psychotics with those of the control group of 39 mentally healthy physicians and nurses at Korea university hospital. The experiences of parental loss in the patients were significantly greater in frequency than those of the control group. The rates of attendances at school were significantly lower than those of the control group. The general incidence of special symptoms of the patients was higher than that of the control group, and the incidence of enuresis was highest among the special symptoms of the patients. The general incidence of behavior disorders of the patients was higer than that of the control group, and the incidences of hyperkinetic reaction and runaway reaction were higher than those of the control group.
