Juvenile Delinquency and Family Relationship

The present study was planned to investigate juvenile delinquents’ parental attitudes and their intrafamilial relationship. The study group was 100 male juvenile delinquents institutionalized in correctional institute. The control group was 100 male high school students. The results were as follows; 1. Parental attitudes of delinquent group were authoritarian and overly strict. Mothers, compared with fathers, appear to be more neglectful. 2. Delinquent subjects avoid their parent more than control group. And, they were resistant particularly to their mother. 3. Parents of the delinquent group seem to have better marital relationship than the control group. 4. Adolescent attitudes toward their sibling were chraacterized by being competitive and critical in the delinquent group compared with control group. 5. Parents of the delinquent group were either indifferent or overconcerned about their children’s heterosexual relationship compared with parents of the control group. 6. Most of parents of the control group wanted their children to continue advanced education. But, parents of the delinquent group showed indifferent attitude toward their children’s education or wished their children to get a job instead of going to school
