Construction of Korean Social Readjustment Rating Scale’ — A Methodological Study —

  • 54

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the applicability and methodological issues in constructing a Social Readjustment Rating Scale for Koreans. Holmes and Rahe’s(1967) original 42 items were supplemented with 21 more items and these 63 life change items were divided into 6 categories and items were listed according to these categorization. After translation and re-wording, the Social Readjustment Rating Questionnaires were sent to parents of 1200 high school girls from presumably heterogeneous sociodemographic background. 595 questionnaires were returned and the data were analyzed statistically. Some of the results and conclusions are as follows: 1. In item analysis, it was found that 47 life change items were unimodal in frequency distribution and 15 items were bimodal. Items showing bimodal distribution need further study on their appropriateness and clarity of the items, and wording and phrasing of the questions. 2. Among the sociodemographic variables, religion, marital status and monthly income were significantly influencing the rating scores in more than 10 items, and education, sex and occupation produced significant differences in only a few items. Age and place of growing up did produce no significant differences in all items. The rating scores did not seem to be significantly affected by whether the subject experienced the particular life change in the immediate past year except in 10 items. No life change items were significantly influenced by more than 3 variables looked at. Life change items in the categories of marital life, occupation and finances appeared to be more frequently influenced by the sociodemographic variables. 3. A crosscultural comparison between Holmes and Rahe’s original SRRS and the tentative Korean SRRS from this study revealed a highly significant rank order correlation (7*s=0.90, P <0. 001), which supports a crosscultural applicability of this kind of life change research. However, in the current study, constriction in the range of rating score was noted and its implic ations were discussed. 4. Life change units (LCU) which the subjects experienced during the immediate past year were calculated according to the tentative SRRS from this study and it was noted that total LCU was not significantly affected by any sociodemographic variables except education. Therefore, total LCU appears to be a useful and reliable tool in life change research. Relatively high annual LCU in this study may be due to increased number of life change items. (50% morethan in Holmes and Rahe’s scale) 5. In conclusion, construction of SRRS is definitely applicable to Korean culture although it involves many methodological difficulties, and rating scores were not greatly influenced by the majority of the sociodemographic variables. However, some items need revision, combination or deletion in future study according to the present findings.
