Somatic Symptoms in Neurotic Patients

Ninetyone neurotic outp atients were studied for their somatic symptom complaints. The results were as follows; 1) The frequent somatic symptoms were those of head in cluding headache (59.3%), cardiovasular and respiratory symptoms (40.6% ), sleep disturbance (38.5% ) ，and gastrointestinal symptoms (27.5%). 2) Relatively rare symptoms were those of uro genital system (6.6% ) and dermatologic symptoms (4 .4% ). 3) The mean number of somatic symptoms was 3.1 and that of mental symptoms was 1.1. 4) Nearly half of the patients (47.3%) complained somatic symptoms only. 5) The group of patients who complained of somatic symptoms only was significantly lower in educational level and older in age than the group of patients who complained both somatic symptoms and mental symptoms ( p < 0 . 05).
