Nowadays Korea needs to develop more effective and progressive music teaching techniques than ever. The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of new teaching methods such as Orff, Koda´ly and MMCP to seventh grade general music. Four classes of first grade were selected from a public girl`s middle school in Kuri, Kyung-gi province. Two classes were designated the experimental groups and the other two classes were the control groups Eight times of music lesson were conducted and each lesson had 45 minutes. The control group taught by traditional teaching techniques emphasized singing with piano accompaniment, music reading, listening, and learning music theory from the song material or listening example. The experimental group taught mostly by new teaching techniques, Orff, Koda´ly and MMCP approach, employed rhythm syllables and hand signs, body movement, instrumental playing, experimenting. The measurement used for both pre-and post-tests was the researcher--made music concept test. The gain score was tested by the indepentent means t test. Analysis of the data showed that the difference of the gain score between the experimental group and control groups was not statistically significant at the .05 level(t=.12). This finding indicate that there was no difference in preparing seventh graders to achieve music concepts taught by whether the new teaching techniques or the traditional teaching techniques. However, students` reactions to the new teaching techniques were highly positive.
