The cylic changes in rapid phase of lithium distribution in uterus and ovaries following single lithium administration during the estrous cycle were measured in the rats having a regular 5 day cycle. The organ retention of lithium after daily administration of alithium salt for 4 weeks was also determined. On each phase of the estrous cycle, lithium in a dose of lOmEq/kg body weight in the form of chloride was intravenously injected. The ratswere then sacrificed after an hour by decapitation, Lithium concentrations in the whole ovary and uterus and in about lgm of liver were measured by means of atomic absorption spectrom etry. Values obtained on each phase of the cycle were compared with the values measured during other phases of the cycle on the one hand, and with the values of rats treated with lithium previously for 4 weeks on the other hand. The followings were the results; 1. Significant differences were noted in the uterine distribution of lithium between the phases of the estrous cycle. The distribution on the day of estrus showed the highest while on the days of metestrus and diestrus significantly lower. 2. The ovarian distribution of lithium noted the highest on the day of proestrus and became lower in accordance with the progress of the cycle. 3. Organ distribution of lithium showed no detectable difference beween uterus and ovaries on the day of diestrus, although the distribution of the ovaries was higher than that of the uterus significantly on the day of proestrus and modestly on the day of estrus. 4. The uterus and ovaries did not accumlate lithium after 4 weeks of lithium administration. 5. From the above results, the followings are suggested. a) Rapid distribution of lithium in the uterus alters in accordance with the progress of the estrous cycle in a pattern similar to that of sodium. b) The more active in ovarian steroid synthesis, the larger is the distribution of lithium in the ovaries. c) Both the ovaries and the uterus are not the organs accumulating large amount of lithium, but ones retaining small amount of lithium during long term administration.
