A Study of The Mental Disorders Reported in The Korean History

The auther has attempted to investigate the mental disorders in the period of Three States and Koryo Dynasty by a review of literatures. The results were as follows; 1. Twenty seven cases were identified to have had mental disorders. 2. A ccording to the clinical impression, the cases of depression were the most common. In the frequency of order, the rest of the mental disorders were schizophrenia, paranoia or paranoid state, manic-depressive illness, hysterical reaction, sexual deviation, convulsive disorder, psychopysiol gical disorder, immature reaction, and unknown mental disorder. 3. The mental disorders were caused mostly by defeat and frustration in competition, and loss of objects due to separation, death and fire. Other causes were attributed to breaking of taboo ghost and natural predisposition. 4. Although the treatment record of the cases were not thoroughly detailed, treatment modalities of the mental disorders were psychotherapy and behavior therapywhich were similar to the modern methods. Also religious rituals, or primitve and shamanistic treatment were undertaken. The results of the mental disorders were mostly death caused by disorders themselves or death penalty.
