Thirty five psychiatric patients who had had their onsets during their employment in Middle- Eastern countries and were hospitalized at Paik Hospital, department of neuropsychiatry, Inje Medical College during the period from Jan. 1976 to Aug. 1980 were studied and the following results were obtained. 1. Schizophrenia and neurosis occupied 42.9% each of all the patients. 2. Many of the patients and especially, most of the schizophrenics were from the lower economic class. 3. The most prevalent age bracket for both schizophrenia and neurosis was the fourth decade. 4. Precipitating factors were identified in 8 cases of schizophrenia and 12 cases of neurosis. Among the precipitating factors, Paykel,s scaling score was high in one case of neurosis and in two cases of schizophrenia. 5. In 60.8% of the patients, the onsets fell within the first three months of their departure from Korea and in 96.4% within 9 months. 6. More onsets were identified during their first over-seas employments. 7. Mean durations of the hospitalization was 6.8±3.4 months for schizophrenics and :1.8±1. 5 months for neurotics, showing a longer hospitalzation compared to the results of other reports.
