This study was designed to investigate the psychiatric evaluation, the psychiatric follow-up care and the psychiatric consultation about the suicide attem pters. The total number of the suicide attem pters who came to the em ergency room of Seoul National University Hospital from July 1, 1979 to Dec. 31, 1979 was 88, and among them , 51 attempters who were consulted to psychiatrist. The total number of subjects in this study was 51 attem pters who were consulted to psychiatrist. The results were as follow: 1. Females outnum bered males and the female/ male ratio was 1:1.68. Half of the suicide attempters were twenties. 2. Drug ingestion was the most frequent method of the attempt (90.2% ), and sedativehyphotics were the most common drug (50%). 3. No significant difference was found about the presumbed time of the attempt. 4. Large part of the suicide attem pters were not married (60.8%). 5. The sequence of educational background of the suicide attem pters were high school graduates, middle school graduates, prim ary school graduates and college graduates. • 6. Those who attem pted suicide two times or more were 27. 5% (14 cases) of 51 attem pters. 7. The most common psychiatric diagnosis of the suicide attempters was depression(52.996). 8. The sequence of the motivation of suicide attempt were manipulative or attention seeking, inferiority, shame and mental disorder. 9. Only two attempters were received psychiatric follow-up care. 10. Those who were not consulted to psychiatrist were substantially 24% (21 cases) of 88 attempters.
