A clinical study on depression of leprosy patients was conducted with Zung’s self-rating depression scale (SDS). For this, 117 leprosy patients were randomly selected among the in patients of the National Leprosy Hospital of Korea. The results were compared with the normal control and the depressive neurosis group. The lepers group showed significantly higher SDS score than normal control group (p < 0 . 001) , though the score was lower than that of depressive neurosis group (p < 0 . 001). The deprssion of the leprosy patients was characterized by the higher score in the items of personal devaluation, psychomotor retard ation , dissatisfaction, decreased libido and suicidal rumination, and by lower score in tne items of agitation , diurnal variation , depressive affect, irritability , sleep disturbance and some somatic symptoms. Among leprosy patients, SDS score was higer in males than fem ales and also higher in 30s and 60s age the group th an others. It was also revealed that the severity of depression was not correlated with the duration of the disease, the type of leprosy, the bacterial index and the official job in the hospital. But the lower SDS score was correlated with the longer admission period, the milder degree of deformity, the lower education level and the simpler kind of the past occupation.
