MMPI OF POST-TRAUMATIC PATIENTS

Traditional approaches to response consistency of inventory type personality test such as MMPI are seem to be three hypothetical model ； Acquiescence response set hypothesis, social desirability set hypothesis and deviant set hypothesis. However, if psychological testing is a process of information- gathering processes about the patient or testee and test responses are a meditators of informa tion-giving processes, test responses may be mainly depended upon his actual role functioning and/or self-concept. Taking the view of functional role concept in mind, the aims of this study are 1) to identify the general M M PI profile pattern of post-traumatic psychiatric patient. 2) to compare with the differences between patie nts M M PI profile and M M PI profile of the induced patient’s role faking. 3) to compare with the relationship betwesn patient s profile pattern and described patient’s symptom complaints. In order to manipulate pathological roles of normal subject, instruction of MMPI is asked to check as if you have physical symptoms in all items connected physical illness and to check against social-desirability. The results were as follow ； 1) Characteristics of M M PI profile of post-traumatic patient are elevated neurotic triads as well as psychotic triads. It may be unreasonable that post-trauma tic patient have really not only neurotic components but. also prominent psychotic components. 2) F scale is extremely elevated in the profile of normal subject’s role faking group. All clinical scales are also extremely elevated, but patterns of MMPI profile of post-traumatic patient and role faking group may be seem to be similar. 3) Pattern analysis or scale difference interpretation are not really applicable in the MMPI profile resulted from role faking and lacks its clinical validity. 4) While test responses are rather accurately manipulated according to role faking, elevated MMPI profiles of post-traumatic patient (particularly elevated F, neurotic triad and psychotic triad) must be cautious in the profile interpretation. 5) It was also suggested that MMPI profile of post-traumatic patient seems to be rather different from actual symptom complaints.
