TH E SCHOOL ADJUSTMENT OF THE DISCHARGED PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS - A STUDY ON THE WOMEN COLLEGE PATIENTS —

This study investigated the school adjustment of college students with multiple psychiatric problems. The authors have realized the urgent need for the evaluation of the problems of college students, paticularaly in relating to their adjustment of college. The purpose of the present study was to conttribute to the improvement of psychiatric treatm ent of college students, and the school adjusment of college life of the students with various conflicting problems. The population studied consisted of 45 college student patients who had admitted in Ewha Medical hospital, department of neuropsychiatry from Jan. 1, 1973 to Aug. 31,1978. The data was collected by an in-patient medical record, out-patient recond, and total school record, and compared and analyzed by computer using the X2-test. The resurts were as follows: 1. The junior class occupied the largest population (35. 9 % ) . 2. The attack was deueloped during the school season, and most of the students were admitted during the mid or last semester. 3. The family structure of the students was rather in normal condition and the social status of their family was relatively in higher social class. 4. As to the diagnostic distribution, there were 16 cases of schizophrenia (35.5%). 11 neurosis (24.496), 11 manic depressive illness (24.4%), two tansient situational maladjustment reaction (4.4 % )、 three psychotic depression (6.9% ), one epilepsy (2.2% ), one organic brain syndrome (2.2%). 5. During hospitalization, the well adjusted group showed more of persistent concern over their schooling, and their attitude to the therapist was relativaly cooperative. 6. Among the students, non-droup out students (60%) had much concern over college life during hospitalization, while drop-out students (40%) showed less. 7. As is expected, drop-out students showed poorer academic performence after discharge than the non drop-out.
