Trends and Issues of Qualitative Research in Music Education in the United States

본 연구는 질적 방법을 사용한 음악교육 연구를 분석하여 음악교육에서의 질적 연구의 동향 고찰을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 2000년부터 2011년까지 미국의 음악교육 학술지 CRME와 JRME에 수록된 질적 방법을 사용한 연구들을 연구 영역, 연구 대상및 연구 참여자, 질적 연구 방법, 질적 자료 수집법, 타당성 검증 방법의 범주에서 분석하였다. 질적 방법을 사용한 음악교육 연구는 총 81편으로 해당 기간의 전체 연구 478편 중 16.9%를 차지하였다. 연구 영역에서는 음악교사 인식 및 음악교사교육이 가장 활발히 연구되었으며, 연구 참여자는 예비교사와 현장교사를 포함한 음악교사의 비중이 높게 나타났다. 질적 접근법은 사례연구와 문화기술지의 비중이 높았으며, 다양한 유형의 방법론적 혼용을 발견할 수 있었다. 대부분의 연구에서 두 개 이상의 자료원을 사용하였으며, 면담법과 관찰법이 많이 사용되었다. 질적 연구의 타당성 검증을 위하여 연구 참여자 검토와 삼각검증법의 활용도가 높은 것으로 나타났다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current issues and the state of music education research using qualitative methods, as published in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education (CRME) and the Journal of Research in Music Education (JRME) from 2000 to 2011. Using descriptive analysis, 81 qualitative studies, which were 16.9% of the 478 research articles published overall in both journals, were classified along with the publication year, subject areas, research participants, research methods, data collection methods, and methods of validation. The major findings are as follows: Teacher experience and teacher education (38.3%) were the most researched topics, followed by student musical culture (19.8%), including multi-cultural music education. Both in-service (31.91%) and pre-service (11.6%) music teachers represented the highest proportion of research participants, followed by secondary students (13.0%). Case study (29.6%) and ethnography (21.0%) were used most, while non-specified qualitative methods accounted for 25.9% of the total. To collect qualitative data, 54.3% of the studies used 3-4 data resources, and interviews and observations were the most frequently applied methods. To validate the trustworthiness of qualitative research, the member-check was the most commonly used method, followed by triangulation and audits. Suggestions for future research and implications for music education are provided.
