A Comparative Study between German and Korean folk lullabies

본 논문에서는 독일 전래 자장가와 한국 전래 자장가의 노랫말과 현 위치를 비교 연구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 두 자장가의 공통점은 첫째, 육아의 정서적, 사회적, 교육적 성장에 지대한 영향력을 행사하고, 둘째, 자장가에 내포된 상상력을 불러일으키는 환상적인 요소 때문에 노래하는 이와 듣는 이에게 재미뿐 만 아니라 아이들에게 아름다운 정서를 키워준다. 셋째, 고유한 민족성이 반영되어 있으며, 넷째, 자장가 가사는 간단하고 반복이 많아 부르기가 용이하다. 반면에 차이점으로, 독일 전래 자장가와 한국 전래 자장가는 아이 돌보는 이가 인지한 자연적, 사회적, 역사적, 문화적인 요인에 따라 리듬, 소재나 주제 면에서 상이할 뿐 만 아니라 노랫말에서도 독특한 민족성을 드러냈다. 또한 전래 자장가를 수용, 홍보하고 전파하는 데 있어서도 독일과 한국은 상이한 역사적 상황으로 인해 각각 다른 발전 경로를 거쳐 발전해 왔다.

This paper focuses on cultural aspects of German and Korean folk lullabies. Our comparative analysis sheds light on some common features. A simple rhythm, a clear content and verbal repetitions can be observed both in German and Korean folk lullabies. Both musical heritages exude a folksy spirit; their lullabies may influence emotions and develop social competence and socialization of infants. Lullabies can be regarded as work songs for babysitters but could also reduce their work-related stress. In addition, lullabies constitute imaginary worlds enjoyable both for parents and babies. Differences can be found concerning the subjects and motifs. Traditional motifs of German folk lullabies are angels, God, sheep, stars, and flowers. This imagery is deeply rooted in Christianity. One of the most conspicious features of German folk lullabies is the pedagogic bias. The imagery in Korean folk lullabies is quite different: the mother, the family, relatives, dogs, and plants are motifs often used. In this context we may find a relation between imagery and Korean values and norms.
