SEX DIFFERENCE IN THE RATE OF DEPRESSION

  • 24

The author studied hitherto reported Korean and. foreign literatures concerning mental illness, especially depression, and attempted to obtain sex ratio, in incident frequency of depression with the subjects of 91 depressive patients among the patients, admitted at paychiatric department of Busan Medical .ScliooL Hospital from-Jan. 1, 1972 to June 30, 1977. Among 91 patients with depression, depressive neurosis was 49. 4% , involutional melancholia 27. 5% psychotic depressive reaction 18. 7% and M. D. I. depression 4. 4%. A review of the literatures indicated that the incidence of depression was more frequent in femalethan in male. The present data also revealed that the frequency of depression in female was about twice as in male. The ratio between percentage of depressive patients, among all admitted male patients and percentage of female depressive patients among all admitted female, patients was 5.2:10.1. The cause of female preponderance in the incidence of depression could be genetic, endocrinological and psychosocial. Regarding the gengtic and endocrinological factors further studies must be expected. Among the psychosocial causes, disadvantageous, social status of woman and marriage life of femaleseemed to play an important role. Jt was thought that conflicts in generation gap arising from the transitional process leading traditional culture to.modern and western culture might accentuate female depression particularly in Korea. After taking several views into consideration, the author inferred that the female might havemore depressive factors from the view-point of: sociocultural background in Korea.
