Characteristics of Alcoholic Subtypes Classified by Age of Onset

In order to clarify the differences in behavioral characteristics between early onset alcoholism and late onset alcoholism, ego strength, hostility and agression were compared between the two groups with Baron’s Ego Strength Scale, Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and Yudofsky’s Overt Aggression Scale. Subjects were 61 cases of alcoholics who were cooperative and had no impaired cognitive function. Among them, 36 cases were the late onset alcoholics whose onset age was after 25 years of age (type 1) and 22 cases were the early onset alcoholics whose onset age was before 25 years of age (type 2). The results were as follows. 1) Ego strength was significantly lower in Type 2 alcoholics than in Type 1 alcoholics. 2) Hostility was significantly higher in Type 2 alcoholics than in Type 1 alcoholics. 3) No significant difference in aggression was proved between the two groups. From the above results, it was concluded that early onset alcoholics were apparently associated with weak ego strength and hostility, suggesting poor prognosis
