The author studied the elderly(>65 in years) in whom diagnosis could not be made with only the Korean version of the mini-mental state examination regarding dementia in a rural community. They comprised 24% of the elderly in the community. Among them, proportion of the elderly with dementia significantly increased with age. Sex distribution, total and subtest scores of the Korean version of the mini-mental state examination, and percent of literacy did not show significant difference between the elderly with and without dementia. Age of the demented was higher than that of the nondemented by 3.7 years, and the difference gained statistical significance. These findings may suggest that the elderly whose scores are low on a screening test should be thoroughly examined including proxy interviews. In addition, the elderly with mental retardation or chronic schizophrenia may be erroneously classified as demented.
