To evaluate the differences of alexithymic trend according to the duration of military service, the authors applied Toronto Alexithymia Scale(TA S), State-Anxiety Inventory(STAl), Somatization Dimension of Symptom Checklist-90-Revision ( SCL-90-L( som )) and Beck s Depression Inventory(BDl) to 98 enlisted men who had served under 15months(lower rank group) and 102 soliders who had served over 15months(higher rank group). The results were as follows • 1) The score of TAS of lower rank group(68.5± 8.75) was significantly higher than that of higher rank group(65.06± 9.63)(p <0.01). 2) The score o f STAI, SCL-90-R(som) and BD I were not different between higher and lower groups. These results suggest that the enlisted men of lower rank group are more alexithymic than those of higher rank group, and are prone to develop the clinical features such as somatization of emotional conflict externally oriented thought process, deficit of imagination and immaturity of emotional differentiation.
