Brain Asymmetry in Visual Recognition of Hangul and Chinese Words

  • 9

For the investigation of brain asymmetry in visual recognition of Hangle and Chinese words, 52 normal subjects(28 males, 24 females) who were physically healthy and right-handed, were tested using the visual half-field task performance. Stimuli were 12 one-letter Hangul words, 12 two-letter Hangul words, 12 one-letter Chinese words and 12 two-letter Chnese words. U sing a computer program and a computer monitor, they were tachistoscopically presented to the location, 3° distant from fixation point in either of the right on left visual field for 150msec. Each subject was instructed to respond by reading the words immediately upon the recognition of them. The procedures were automatically controlled by computer program. Sequence of presentation was randomized. The reaction time and the correct response rate were measured and analyzed. 1) The reaction time was significantly shorter in the right visual field than in the left Each reaction time of one-letter Hangul words, two-letter Hangul words and one-letter Chinese words was significantly shorter in the right visual field than in the left. The reaction times of two-letter Hangul words and one-letter Chinese words were significantly shorter than one-letter Chinese words and two-letter Chinese words, respectivity. 2) The correct response rate was significantly higher in the right visual field than in the left. And the correct response rates of one-letter Hangul words, two-letter Hangul words and one-letter Chinese words were significantly higher in the right risual field than in the left. 3) There were no significant interactions of between the visual field condition and the condition of the type of presented words in both reaction time and correct response rate. In conclusion, the results suggest that the right visual field (left hemisphere) was superior to the left visual field (right hemisphere) in the recognition of both Hangul and Chinese words.
