Aggression and Repeated Traffic Accident in Taxi Drivers

  • 17

The study was designed to evaluate the aggressive tendency in taxi drivers who were involved in repeated traffic accidents. The author selected 86 taxi dirvers from a taxi com pany in Pusang^ whose education was between 9 to 12 years. Their career in driving were longer than five years. The rate of response to the questionaires was higher than 90 percent. The accident was defined as any accident that incurred at least 100,000 won worth of material damage or injury to a person. The subjects were divided into two groups : high accident group was composed o f subjects who have been in three or more traffic accidents during his career in driving, and low accident group, in no or one traffic accident. Aggressive tendency was measured by means of Hostility G uilt Inventory of Buss and Durkee (B D H I),Irritability-Depression-Anxiety Scale o f Snaity(IDA) and Symptom Checklist-90-R of Derogatis(SCL-90-R). Correlation coefficients were calculated between frequency of the accidents and the scores of subscales of the above instruments ; means o f the subscales o f the high and low accident groups were com pared using student’s t test. Discrim inant function analysis was attempted to discriminate between the high and low accident groups. The results were as follows ; 1) Frequency of traffic accident was not correlated with age and driving career. 2) Frequency of traffic accident was positively correlated with total score and motor com ponent of BDHI, total score of IDA and global index of SCL-90-R respectively. 3) High accident group had significantly higher means of total score, scores of motor com ponent and attitudinal com ponent o f BDHI, total score and score of irritability of IDA and score of interpersonal sensitivity and global index subscales of SCL-90-R as compared to low accident group. 4) Discrim inant function analysis between high and low accident group yielded nine significant variables ; those whith positive standardized canonical discriminant function coefficients were motor com ponent(B D H l), irritability outwards (IDA ), depression (IDA ), guilt(SCL-90-R), positive symptom total (SCL-90-R) and positive symptom distress index(SCL-90-R) ; and those with negative coefficients were indirect hostility (BDHI),irritability inwards (IDA) and additional items (SCL-90-R). With these nine variables, high accident group was discriminated accurately in 81.8%, and low accident group, in 65.4%. The rate of ‘grouped’ cases correctly classified was 74.6%. From these results it was suggested that action-oriented outward aggression and poorer control of hostility were significantly correlated with repeated traffic accident and also the high accident group was characterized by higher outward aggression and severer general psychopathology.
