Personality Traits and Characteristics of the Patients Recovered from Affective Disorders

The authors administered the Korean-standardized Cattell’s 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire to three groups : 35 patients with unipolar affective disorder, 35 patients with bipolar affective disorder, and 35 healthy subjects. Patients were evaluated after their symptoms disappeared. In first stratum source traits, patients with bipolar affective disorder demonstrated significantly more A-factor and E-factor than patients with unipolar affective disorder or healthy controls. The H-factor significantly differentiated 3 groups from each other. The patients with unipolar affective disorder dem onstrated significantly more F-factor, L-factor, O-factor, Q4-factor than patients with bipolar affective disorder or healthy controls. In second stratum source traits, the EXT-factor and IND-factor significantly differentiated 3 groups from each other. The patients with unipolar affective disorder demonstrated significantly more ANX-factor than patients with bipolar affective disorder or healthy controls. The above findings suggest the patients with unipolar affective disorder are dependent and introverted. And they show characteristics like desurgency, shyness, trustfulness, guilt-proness, tension, and anxiety more often. They also suggest the patients with bipolar affective disorder are extroverted independent and show characteristics like warmth, dominance, and boldness more often.
