A Study for Neurologic Abnormality in Schizophrenic Patients

The standard neurologic examination was performed to evaluate prevalence of abnormal findings and their clinical significance for schizophrenic patients. DSM -III-R diagnosed , ageand sex- matched groups of 35 schizophrenic patients, 24 patients with bipolar affective disorder with histoiy of psychosis, 26 patients hospitalized for alcohol dependence or other drug abuse, and 33 normal volunteers were the subjects. All three patient groups had significantly more total abnormalities than normal control group, but there were no significant differences when patient groups were com pared with each other. When the findings due to medication or others unrelated to the pathogenesis of psychiatric illness were excluded, the differences between the following groups, i.e., the schzophrenic group vs normal control group, schizophrenic group vs bipolar affective disorder group, and alcohol dependence and other drug abuse group vs normal control group, remained significant. When those neurologic abnormalities indicating lo calized dysfunction of the corticospinal tracts, basal ganglia, or cerebellum were considered only two pairs showed significant differences. They were schizophrenic group vs normal control group and alcohol dependence and other drug abuse group vs normal control group.
