Anxiety and depression appear frequently in patients who are on hemodialysis. We tried to find whether showing anxiety and depression was related to coping strategy they used in crisis. One hundred and five patients who were on hemodialysis at Chonnam National University Hospital, Chosun University Hospital, Kwangju Chri Hospital or Kwangju Nam kwang Hospital from Aug 1 st 1990. to Oct 10th, 1990 were compared with thirty persons. The results were as follow; 1) Hemod ialysis patients showed anxiety and depression more frequently than normal persons. 2 ) More frequently used coping strategies are redefinition, suppression and intellectualization. Depression was strongly correlated with fatalism , acting out isolation, state anxiety was correlated with shared concern, reduction, isolation and self-pity, but trait anxiety was not correlated with coping in this study
