The Effects of Long-term Lithium Treatment on the Parathyroid Hormone and Calcium Level

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of long-term lithium treatment on the parathyroid hormone and calcium level. The subjects 17 inpatients and 10 healthy persons. Am ong 17 inpatients, 13 had bipolar affective disorder and 4 had schizoaffective disorder. The 17 inpatients had been treated with lithium carbonate for more than 6 months in Samyoung mental hospital. The 10 healthy persons were used as control group and composed of personnels of the Soonchunhyang university hospital. Two groups were compared with each other in the serum parathyroid hormone, total calcium and ionized calcium levels. In inpatient group, the correlations between serum lithium level and serum parathyroid hormone, total calcium, ionized calcium levels were analyzed. The results are summarized as follow : 1) The long-term lithium-treated inpatient group showed significantly higher serum parathyroid hormone level than the control group. 2) Serum total calcium and ionized calcium levels of the long-term lithium-treated in patient group were increased slightly, but there was no significant difference. 3) The long-term lithium-treated inpatient group showed the significant positive correlation between serum lithium and serum total calcium level. 4) The long-term lithium-treated inpatient group showed no significant correlation between serum lithium level and serum parathyroid hormone and ionized calcium levels
