A Preliminary Study on the Attitudes of Schizophrenics Toward TheirIllness

This study was to investigate the clinical significance of the schizophrenic patients attitudes toward their illness. The study was conducted at psychiatric outpatient clinics of both Kyungpook National University and Taegu Psychiatric Clinic between July and September of 1990. One hundred twenty seven schizophrenics were adopted as subjects o f this study, who showed “absent symptom” and “slight symptom” evaluated by Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. Self-rating scale, composed of 5 subareas, i.e., patients’ insight into thier illness, patients’ sense of control over their illness, patients，sense of location of causes of their illness, patients， evluation of their illness and patients，readiness to discuss facts of their illness, was applied to the subjects to sort out attitude types. Then, the clinical variables, the social adjustment and the opinions about treatment between the integrating and the isolating attitude groups were compared. The results were as follows; First, attitude types were identified as integrating attitude in 72 cases(56.7%)，isolating attitude in 16 cases( 12 .60 and undecided attitude in 39 cases(30.7%). Second, as to the age, sex and education, there was no significant difference between the integrating and isolating attitude groups. Third, regarding the social adjustment to work, family and interpersonal areas, the integrating attitude group significantly showed better adjustment than the isolating attitude group only in the area of interpersonal relation. Lastly, concerning the opinions about general treatment and medication, both the integrating and isolating attitude groups responded as helpful without significant difference. The opinions about psychotherapy, however, made some differences the integrating attitude group significantly responded as helpful to the psychotherapy as compared with the isolating attitude group. Accordingly, the recognition of attitude types will provide direction of therapeutic strategy in treating the schizophrenics after discharge from hospital.
