This study was performed to observe the effect of carbon monoxide on the [3H] 5-HT binding sites in neonatal rat brains during each developmental stage. 5 day old and 6 week old Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to 0.42% carbon monoxide. The rats were sacrificed immediately, after 24 hours, after 1 week, and at 16 weeks of age. Cortex, hippocampus, and striatum were dissected for two point assay with InM and lOnM of [3H] 5-HT. Scatchard analysis was done for the cortices of those rats exposed to air or carbon monoxide when they were 5 days old and sacrificed after 24 hours and at 16 weeks of age, and also those rats, exposed when they were 6 weeks old and sacrificed at 16 weeks of age. We did not find any statistically significant difference between the carbon monoxide and air group at each different condition in two point assay and in Scatchard analysis. We did observe the trend that carbon monoxide can influence persistently upon [3H] 5-HT binding sites in neonatal rats, which deserves further study.
