This study was designed to evaluate the differences o f right and left hemispheric function in chronic schizoprenics. The author selected 57 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 60 normal controls. Total patients and normal controls were divied into two groups according to the criteria of hand preference o f Annett. Subscales o f right and left hemispheric functions were measured in all subjects by items selected from the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Test. The results were as follows * 1) Both left and right hemispheric fundtions were significantly lower in the chronic schizophrenic patients than in the normal control(p< 0 .0 0 0 l). 2) N o significant difference in the right hemisphreric function was seen between right handed patient group and left handed patient group. 3) However, a significant reduction o f the left hemispheric function was proved in the left handed as compared to the right handed schizophrenic patients(p<0.003). Form these results, the author suggests that the left handed schizophrenic patient group has more prominent impairment o f the left hemispheric function as compared to the right handed patient group.
