In order to determine the prevalence rates of major psychoses in Imhoe-myon, Jindo, Chunnam, this survey was conducted using the intensive census visit method in March, 1976. Jindo is an island where the people seem to be very conservative and their economic & cultural backgrounds are based mostly on agriculture in spite of their location. Followings are the results obtained. 1) Twenty three schizophrenics, one manic depressive, twenty-four epileptics and twenty-two mentally retarded were found among 14,049 in habitants. The prevalence rates for schizophrenia, manic depressive illness, epilepsy and mental retardation were 0.16%, 0.007%, 0 .17% and 0.15% respectively. 2) Many of the patients had a chronic course of the disorders; about half of the schizophrenics (43.4%), four-fifths of the epileptics (79.1%) and all cases of the retarded had illed for more than five years. 3) The economic status was generally low, for example, the arable land they had was below 0.3 ha in fifteen schizophrenics (65.2%) and fourteen epileptics (58.3%). 4) More than half of the schizophrenics (69. 6%) were abandoned in treatment and the most popular choice of treatment was shamanic practices, then the followers were herb medicine, acupuncture, drugs and hospitals in descending order. 5) Such unfavorable therapeutic environments and chronic, rejected situations of the patients strongly require establishing systematic plans by the nation.
