This survey was intended to obtain data on following subjects, from 316 rural residents and 69 patient relatives with open question technique: 1. The concepts of mental disordesand its treatment. 2. The differential points between the mentally llled and the normal, 3. The opinions about marriage, emloyment and recovery of the mentallypled. 4. The meaning of Hwa Byung and the opinion of its relationship with the mental disorder. The results suggested the followings: 1. The most popular concept of the mental disorders was psychological one, which are heavily influenced by the concept of the Oriental medicine. 2. For the treat mental disorders, the relatives of patients most frequently regarded the Western medicine as the most favorite treatment while the other rural neighbors regarded the folk-psychological measures as the best. 3. Both the relatives of patients and other rural population have a tendency to regard the patients* illogical and irrelevant speech and bizarre behaviors as the main difference bethween the healthy and the mentally illed. 4. Only about 30% of the rural residents expressed positively about social adaptation of patients while the relatives of patients did more negatively, probably, due to difficult experiences in dealing with the patients. 5. The meaning of “Hwa Byung* could be said as a disorder which comes from actute psychological conflicts and subsides after elimination of those.
