Twenty-one hospitalized schizophrenic patients (12 paranoid, 2 catatonic, 2 simple, 2 undifferentiated, 2 hebephrenic, 1 schizoaffective), aged between 17 to 52 years, were treated for more than 8 weeks with thiothixene, a new non-phenothiazine neuroleptic as sole therapy. Six were acute, & recurrent and 7 chronic cases. The doses were adjusted according to the amount of the previous neuroleptics. A daily dose of 15 to 30mg appeared to be effective in most cases. Thiothixene showed a definite neuroleptic action, and most of the patients became cooperative and. easier to manage. Emotional withdrawal, depressive mood, motor retardation, uncooperativeness and blunted affect were found to be the most responsive symptoms to the Thiothixene therapy.
