음악 요소 학습이 서양 고전주의 음악의 수용에 미치는 영향

Influences of Learning Musical Elements on the Reception of Western Classical Music

음악 이해의 폭을 넓히기 위하여 음악의 다양한 요소를 지도하여야 한다는 주장에 비하여 그 상관관계를 살피는 노력이 아직 미비한 실정이다. 본 연구는 리듬, 가락, 화성의 학습이 일반적으로 난해하다고 여겨지는 서양 고전주의 음악의 이해에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 실증적으로 고찰하고자 한다. 연구자는 음악 요소별 활동 중심의 음악수업을 받아본 경험이 거의 없는 초등학교 4학년 학생들에게 일정한 교수학습 프로그램을 제공한 후 고전시대의 현악사중주에 대한 관심 변화를 추적한다. 실험반의 학생들은 호감도와 선호도 및 활동 태도에서 긍정적 변화를 보였다. 비교반의 경우, 변화가 없거나 부정적 변화를 보였다. 이를 통해 체험 중심의 음악 요소 학습이 서양 클래식 음악의 이해도를 높이는 데 기여할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

Despite of a lot of arguments that musical elements should be taught in various ways in music class, there are not sufficient demonstrations for the reason. This study deals with reactions of students in fourth grade who got systematic music lessons to deal with rhythm, melody, and harmony in elementary music class. Students of two classes where Korean volunteer teachers provided special music learning activities showed more positive changes towards Western classical musical works, i.e. three string quartets composed respectively by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven in Classic period of Western music history. The result of this study point to several promising applications for music education in elementary schools to develop a strategy for cultivating an appreciation of Western Classical music.
